About the Section 179 Business Vehicle Tax Deduction

Section 179 is part of the federal tax code, allowing business owners to add value to their business without taking on excessive debt. The deduction allows you to deduct the cost of property as an expense, meaning you can deduct up to $25,000 per vehicle you purchase for your business. Taking advantage of Section 179 is particularly great for small business owners, as they can take advantage of this tax-saving opportunity on multiple vehicles over the course of the year. It also helps you afford bigger vehicles, more features, and more expensive trim levels you otherwise may not be able to purchase.

How Does a Vehicle Qualify for Section 179?

To qualify for Section 179, your Ford needs to have a gross weight of over 6,000 lbs and under 14,000 lbs. You’ll also need to put the vehicle into service before the end of the year. Being put into service in this context means the vehicle needs to be used for business purposes more than 50% of the time. This section of the tax law was initially intended to make machinery more affordable. Now that several SUVs and pickup trucks meet the required weight standards, they also qualify. You are allowed to use your vehicle for personal reasons at times, but doing so may lower the deduction provisioned by Section 179. To learn more about the minutiae of the tax code, you’ll want to consult a tax professional.
